Unit 10 Overview

How does America face the world?

This is the tenth unit in my Civics and American Government curriculum, and it takes students beyond our borders. They learn who makes American foreign policy, how it has changed throughout history, and how other countries govern themselves.

Along the way, students outline milestones in American foreign policy, rank today's foreign policy priorities, write a policy brief on a current issue, compare the governments of six countries, explore political culture through newspaper front pages, and promote an international organization.

You can buy every resource for this unit here, or join Students of History to immediately access every lesson online, along with every other unit in the course.

Day-by-Day Flow

How the unit runs

The unit plan guide includes lesson plans for every day, so you always know which resource to use and how. Here's how the unit moves from start to finish.

1

Foreign Policy Basics

A PowerPoint with guided notes covers the foreign policy roles of the president, Congress, and State Department. Students then complete a reading and interactive notebook page on each one's responsibilities.

2

History of Foreign Policy

After a HipHughes video (dance moves included), students analyze milestones in American foreign policy. A Thirteen Days movie project is also included if you want to dig into the Cuban Missile Crisis.

3

Priorities & Current Issues

Students rank America's top foreign policy priorities and compare their rankings as a class. Then groups research a current issue and write a foreign policy brief with recommendations.

4

Comparative Government

A PowerPoint compares the governments of the UK, China, Nigeria, Mexico, Russia, and Iran. Students then read about political culture and explore newspaper front pages from around the world.

5

Global Organizations

Students trace where their clothes are made to see globalization at work. Then groups create a poster or commercial promoting the goals of an international organization.

6

Review & Assessment

Quizlet vocabulary and online review games get students ready for the editable unit test.
