Unit 11 Overview

The top and bottom of the world

This is the final unit in my World Geography curriculum. It's a short mini unit that wraps up the year at the ends of the Earth, where ice, extreme cold, and a changing climate shape everything.

Students compare the Arctic and Antarctica, work through an Arctic Circle escape room, and investigate how melting sea ice is opening up new shipping routes across the top of the world. Along the way, they learn about climate change, polar wildlife, indigenous peoples, and the physical geography of both regions.

You can buy every resource for this unit here, or join Students of History to immediately access every lesson online, along with every other unit in the course.

How It Flows

How the mini unit runs

This short unit fits into a few class periods and is easy to adapt for your classroom. Here's how it moves from start to finish.

1

Meet the Poles

A PowerPoint, narrated flipped classroom video, guided notes, and maps cover both regions. Then readings and activities help students compare the Arctic and Antarctica.

2

Escape the Arctic

An escape room uses the 5 Themes of Geography to explore the Arctic's geography, wildlife, climate change, indigenous peoples, and explorers.

3

New Routes & Wrap Up

A case study shows how climate change is opening new shipping routes through the Arctic. An editable quiz wraps up the unit.
