Unit 10 Overview

From the Outback to Polynesia

This is the tenth unit in my World Geography curriculum. Oceania covers a third of the planet's surface but is mostly ocean, from the dry Australian Outback to thousands of islands scattered across the Pacific.

Over the course of the unit, students explore Pacific cultures and the ancient art of wayfinding, race to escape the Australian Outback, and investigate how phosphate mining transformed the tiny island nation of Nauru.

You can buy every resource for this unit here, or join Students of History to immediately access every lesson online, along with every other unit in the course.

Day-by-Day Flow

How the unit runs

The unit plan guide includes lesson plans for every day, so you always know which resource to use and how. Here's how the unit moves from start to finish.

1

Day 1: Australia & New Zealand

A PowerPoint, guided notes, and map cover the cities, capitals, and geographic features of both countries.

2

Day 2: Escape from the Outback

Students move through five stations in an escape room on the landmarks and geography of the Australian Outback.

3

Days 3-4: Melanesia & Wayfinding

A lesson on the islands of Melanesia, then students become navigators and plan a sailing route to three islands across the Pacific, with readings on Pacific Islander peoples.

4

Days 5-6: Micronesia & Nauru

A lesson on the islands of Micronesia, then a case study on how Nauru's phosphate boom and bust became a cautionary tale.

5

Day 7: Polynesia

Students learn the islands and cultures of Polynesia, plus the story of why Samoa skipped a day when it switched sides of the International Date Line.

6
