Unit 3 Overview

An isthmus, islands, and everything in between

This is the third unit in my World Geography curriculum. Students head south from North America to explore the narrow isthmus of Central America and the islands of the Caribbean, two regions shaped by their geography, their history, and the wider world.

Over the course of the unit, students map the region, trace the building of the Panama Canal, put the United Fruit Company on trial, plan a Caribbean culture cruise, and look at Costa Rica's push for renewable energy.

You can buy every resource for this unit here, or join Students of History to immediately access every lesson online, along with every other unit in the course.

Day-by-Day Flow

How the unit runs

The unit plan guide includes lesson plans for every day, so you always know which resource to use and how. Here's how the unit moves from start to finish.

1

Days 1-2: Mapping Central America

A PowerPoint, guided notes, and map cover the seven countries of Central America, followed by a lesson comparing the region's physical features, regions, and ecosystems.

2

Days 3-4: People & the Panama Canal

An escape room explores the people and cultures of Central America, then a timeline activity traces how the Panama Canal was built and what it changed.

3

Day 5: Bananas on Trial

In a Guatemala vs. United Fruit Company mock trial, students argue a real case about land, power, and foreign influence in the region.

4

Day 6: Costa Rica Goes Green

A renewable energy case study shows how Costa Rica became a leader in clean energy and what it has meant for the country's environment and economy.

5

Days 7-9: The Caribbean

Students learn the Caribbean's islands and cultures and analyze population pyramids, plan their own Caribbean culture cruise, and study the environmental challenges the islands face.

6

Review & Assessment

A review game, online readings with audio, and a current event activity prepare students for the editable unit test.
