Unit 8 Overview
From the steppes to the islands of Japan
This is the eighth unit in my World Geography curriculum. Central and East Asia stretch from the landlocked "stans" to the Pacific coast, and include some of the most populated and powerful countries in the world.
Over the course of the unit, students break free from Communism in an escape room, compare life in North and South Korea, analyze Japan's geography through maps, and investigate how and why China is building new islands in the South China Sea.

Day-by-Day Flow
How the unit runs
The unit plan guide includes lesson plans for every day, so you always know which resource to use and how. Here's how the unit moves from start to finish.
Day 1: Countries of East Asia
A PowerPoint, guided notes, and map cover the countries, capitals, and geography of East Asia, with a latitude and longitude worksheet.
Days 2-3: Communism in Asia
Students analyze how communism changed China's society and economy, then an escape room looks at its impact on five countries across Asia.
Days 4-5: Landforms & Artificial Islands
A lesson on East Asia's landforms and bodies of water, then a case study on China building artificial islands in the South China Sea.
Days 6-7: Japan & Korea
Students analyze maps of Japan through the 5 Themes, then compare North and South Korea in a lesson on the divided peninsula.
Days 8-9: Central Asia & the Silk Road
A Central Asia lesson leads into Silk Road stations where students trace how goods and ideas spread across Eurasia.
Review & Assessment
A review game, online readings with audio, and a current event activity prepare students for the editable unit test, which also comes in a Google Forms version.
