Unit 1 Overview

Where in the world do we start?

This is the first unit in my World Geography curriculum. Before students travel region by region, they need the tools geographers use: the 5 Themes, how to read a map, and how the physical world and people shape each other.

Over the course of the unit, students learn the 5 Themes of Geography, practice map skills and latitude and longitude, explore landforms, water, climate, and biomes, and investigate population, migration, culture, religion, and government around the world.

You can buy every resource for this unit here, or join Students of History to immediately access every lesson online, along with every other unit in the course.

Day-by-Day Flow

How the unit runs

The unit plan guide includes lesson plans for every day, so you always know which resource to use and how. Here's how the unit moves from start to finish.

1

What Is Geography?

The unit opens with an introduction to geography and the 5 Themes. Students complete a world map puzzle, build a 5 Themes cube, and connect the themes to current events.

2

Maps & Location

A map skills lesson leads into analyzing maps stations, then absolute and relative location. A latitude and longitude Battleship game makes the practice fun.

3

The Physical World

Students study regions, then landforms through an escape room and a create-your-own continent project. They finish with water systems, climate zones, and biomes stations.

4

People & the Planet

A Flint Water Crisis case study brings human-environment interaction to life. Next, students analyze population pyramids and explore push and pull factors through real refugee and migrant stories.

5

Culture, Religion & Government

Students learn about culture and human geography, map the world's major religions, and build political and economic country profiles. A country research project ties it all together.

6

Review & Assessment

A crossword, a word search, and online review games prepare students for the editable unit test.
