Unit 6 Overview
Where three continents meet
This is the sixth unit in my World Geography curriculum. The Middle East and North Africa sit at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa, and their geography, from deserts and oil to the Nile River, helps explain much of what students see in the news.
Over the course of the unit, students compete to present the region's most impressive mega projects, investigate Kuwait's oil well fires from the Persian Gulf War, trace the Arab Spring on a timeline and map, and find out how Egypt is building a brand new Nile River delta in the desert.

Day-by-Day Flow
How the unit runs
The unit plan guide includes lesson plans for every day, so you always know which resource to use and how. Here's how the unit moves from start to finish.
Days 1-2: Countries of the Middle East
A PowerPoint with a video, guided notes, and maps is split over two days to cover the countries, capitals, and geography of the Middle East.
Days 3-4: Environment & Landforms
Students explore environmental programs across the Middle East, then dig into the region's landforms and bodies of water.
Days 5-6: Mega Projects & Oil Fires
Groups research and present the region's biggest mega projects and hand out awards, then a case study covers Kuwait's oil well fires from the Gulf War.
Days 7-8: Conflict & North Africa
A lesson on conflicts in the Middle East explains their background and where they stand today, then students move on to the countries of North Africa and Egypt's new Nile delta.
Days 9-11: Water, Protests, & Maps
An escape room on water scarcity in the Sahara, an Arab Spring timeline, and a map analysis activity covering the whole region.
Review & Assessment
A review game, online readings with audio, and a current event activity prepare students for the editable unit test, which also comes in a Google Forms version.
