Unit 4 Overview
From the Amazon to the Andes
This is the fourth unit in my World Geography curriculum. South America packs the world's largest rainforest, its longest mountain range, and one of its driest deserts into a single continent, which makes it a perfect place to see how geography shapes people's lives.
Over the course of the unit, students break out of an Amazon rainforest escape room, explore the Andes, map the route of The Motorcycle Diaries, take a 3D trip to the Galapagos Islands, and investigate drought in Chile.

Day-by-Day Flow
How the unit runs
The unit plan guide includes lesson plans for every day, so you always know which resource to use and how. Here's how the unit moves from start to finish.
Days 1-2: Countries of South America
A PowerPoint, guided notes, and map cover the continent's countries and capitals. Then students kick off the Motorcycle Diaries project, a travel diary of a virtual trip across South America.
Days 3-4: Landforms & the Galapagos
A lesson on South America's landforms and bodies of water leads into a virtual field trip to the Galapagos Islands, with a 3D PowerPoint option.
Days 5-6: The Amazon & the Andes
Students race down the Amazon River in an escape room, then sort images of the Andes into the Tropical, Wet, and Dry Andes.
Days 7-8: Drought & Dictators
A case study on Chile's megadrought connects geography to a real challenge, then a lesson covers the Cold War, Operation Condor, and dictatorships in the Southern Cone.
Day 9: Culture & Traditions
A reading, video, and student activity on South American culture and traditions, with time to wrap up the Motorcycle Diaries project.
Review & Assessment
A review game, online readings with audio, and a current event activity prepare students for the editable unit test.
