Unit 9 Overview
From the Himalayas to Indonesia
This is the ninth unit in my World Geography curriculum. South and Southeast Asia are home to about a third of the world's people, with landscapes that range from the highest mountains on Earth to thousands of tropical islands.
Over the course of the unit, students backpack the famous "Banana Pancake Trail" across Southeast Asia, argue a mock trial over who should control Kashmir, escape the era of imperialism and colonization, and find out why Indonesia is building a brand new capital city.

Day-by-Day Flow
How the unit runs
The unit plan guide includes lesson plans for every day, so you always know which resource to use and how. Here's how the unit moves from start to finish.
Day 1: Countries of South Asia
A PowerPoint, guided notes, and map cover the countries, capitals, and geography of South Asia, with a latitude and longitude worksheet.
Days 2-3: Partition & Kashmir
Students evaluate the plan for the Partition of India, then hold a mock trial on the competing claims to Kashmir from India, Pakistan, and China.
Days 4-5: Into Southeast Asia
Students start a travel blog project along the Banana Pancake Trail, then learn the countries and geography of Southeast Asia.
Days 6-7: Landforms & Case Studies
A lesson on the landforms and waterways of both regions, then a choice of case studies on Singapore the Garden City or Indonesia's new capital, Nusantara.
Days 8-9: Empire & the Tsunami
An escape room on colonialism in Southeast Asia, then a lesson on the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and how prepared the region is today.
Review & Assessment
A review game, online readings with audio, and a current event activity prepare students for the editable unit test, which also comes in a Google Forms version.
