Unit 7 Overview

A continent of incredible diversity

This is the seventh unit in my World Geography curriculum. Sub-Saharan Africa is home to dozens of countries, thousands of languages, and some of the most dramatic landscapes on Earth, so the unit takes students through it one region at a time.

Over the course of the unit, students plan their own expedition across the continent, race to escape the Serengeti, discover the mottos and nicknames of Africa's countries, and investigate how cobalt mining in the Congo connects to the phones in their pockets.

You can buy every resource for this unit here, or join Students of History to immediately access every lesson online, along with every other unit in the course.

Day-by-Day Flow

How the unit runs

The unit plan guide includes lesson plans for every day, so you always know which resource to use and how. Here's how the unit moves from start to finish.

1

Days 1-2: Africa's Physical Geography

A PowerPoint and map cover Africa's landforms and bodies of water, then students start the Expedition Africa project, planning a tour across one region of Sub-Saharan Africa.

2

Days 3-4: West Africa

Students learn the countries of West Africa and the continent's natural resources, then reinforce Africa's landforms and waterways with a reading activity.

3

Days 5-6: Central & East Africa

Lessons on both regions pair with a case study on mining in the DR Congo and a reading on Rwanda's milk bars.

4

Days 7-8: Serengeti & Southern Africa

An escape room on poaching in the Serengeti, then a Southern Africa lesson and an activity on the nicknames of African countries.

5

Day 9: African Decolonization

A lesson on decolonization leads into a source analysis of speeches by African leaders on its benefits and struggles.

6

A review game, online readings with audio, and a current event activity prepare students for the editable unit test, which also comes in a Google Forms version.

β€œThis resource is OUTSTANDING!!! I love the day-by-day overview. The notes are incredibly helpful, as are the speaker notes in the PowerPoints. The digital activity notebook is wonderful, while also having a paper option for students who may not have a device. Definitely worth the money!”
